Modena Balsamic Vinegar: When the Genius Loci Becomes Cultural Heritage
In the heart of Modena, where the passion for speed and the culture of taste merge into a single soul, a new, historic route has been charted for our region's black gold.
Within the evocative setting of the Enzo Ferrari Museum, we took part in the 2026 Public Assembly of the Consortium for the Protection of Balsamic Vinegar of Modena.
It was a moment of profound sharing and reflection on the economic, but above all cultural, value of an excellence that is also the identity card of an entire land.
The most exciting announcement was The announcement came from President Cesare Mazzetti: the official candidacy of Balsamic Vinegar as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
"Let's start from the fact that the product is strongly linked to the territory, it has a centuries-old culture," Mazzetti explained. "Today, there are 6,000 families in the Modena and Reggio Emilia area alone who produce vinegar at home and participate in the Palio di San Giovanni to see who has made the best. It's something you can't find anywhere else in the world."
The candidacy will be presented together with the Traditional Modena and Reggio Emilia consortia, the two PDOs, the consortia, and the institutions.
"We want to establish Modena as a center of attraction for balsamic vinegar, including tourism," added the president.
"Balsamic" is a centuries-old ritual, a handed-down know-how that still breathes in the vinegar factories and unites thousands of families.
A journey that We at Acetaia Malpighi, now proudly in our fifth generation, stand proudly behind this tradition, carrying with us that profound sense of responsibility that comes from guarding a family secret that ultimately belongs to everyone's heritage. For us, preserving tradition since 1850 means helping it evolve, bringing the culture of "Modena savoir faire" to the tables of the world's most discerning palates. The road to UNESCO recognition is a testament to what we have always believed: balsamic vinegar is a living art.
Thanks to all the Consortia and institutions for this extraordinary moment of discussion.
